Apple’s new Standby mode will change the way you use your iPhone for good

Apple has revealed iOS 17 which comes with a cool new upgrade for the iPhone.

Apple is set to change the way you use the iPhone when it's not in your hand with a new feature coming to iOS 17 later this year. Announced at WWDC, the company's annual developer conference in California, the new software feature will encourage you to turn your iPhone into a desk buddy, kitchen clock, or bedside table companion when you aren't using it.

Called Standby, the new enhancement will let you display key information like the weather, news, calendar appointments, and other widgets when the iPhone is in a landscape orientation.

If that sounds familiar, it's because widgets are already available on iOS 16 (just swipe right on your iPhone screen), but until now the widgets screen hasn't been available in landscape or when the phone is locked.

The company hopes that the new feature will encourage users to turn their iPhone into information centres when they aren't using it, especially for those that have an always-on display as found in the iPhone 14.

The new feature will work with all currently supported apps from Apple as well as third-party apps from other developers.

This upgrade could also breathe new life into older devices by allowing you to turn an older iPhone into a control centre for your home.

Users will be able to swipe to the side will show photos, time, and widgets like weather, home controls, or calendar appointments. The display will change based on time and activity in the same way intelligent widgets already do on the iPhone currently.

The new feature is just one of many in iOS 17 that has been announced. Other new tricks include better autocorrect features, a way of sharing contact information with NameDrop and the ability to download Apple Maps to use offline. The company has also introduced enhancements to the Phone, FaceTime, and Messages app.

The new iOS 17 update, which will be available on Apple iPhone 7 and above, is expected to launch in September.
